College girl ‘commits suicide’

A female college student allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at a student mess at Sheikhhati High Court intersection area in Jessore on Saturday morning, reports news agency UNB.

The deceased is Sumaiya Khatun Urmi, 18, daughter of Md Omor Ali, hailing from Alaipur village of Kaliganj upazila in Jhenidah district and a third year engineering student of Jessore Government Polytechnic College.

Rakib Ahmed, deceased’s uncle said, Urmi, who used to live in a student hostel, killed herself after knowing that she had failed in the exam around 11am when other roommates were not in the room.

Later, the roommates and the hostel owner recovered her body and took it to Jessore General Hospital where the physician on duty declared her dead, said Urmi’s another uncle Mizanur Rahman quoting one of the roommates.

Sub-inspector Arun Kumar Das of Kotwali police station said the reason behind her death will be confirmed after getting the autopsy report.
