AL picks Khaleque for Khulna, Zahangir for Gazipur city polls

Ruling Awami League has picked Talukder Abdul Khaleque and Zahangir Alam as the party's nominees for contesting elections to Khulna and Gazipur city corporations respectively billed for 15 May.

Their nomination was confirmed at a meeting of the AL's local government election nomination board held on Sunday, reports news agency UNB.

AL president, prime minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting held at her official residence Ganobhaban.

“After reviewing everything, we’ve decided to nominate them (Khaleque and Zahangir) for the city corporation polls,” AL general secretary Obaidul Quader informed reporters after the meeting.

On 31 March, chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda announced the election schedule for Khulna and Gazipur city corporations.

According to the election schedules, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers is 12 April, while the dates for scrutinising those are 15 and 16 April, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is 23 April.
