14 journos get Brac Migration Media Award

Non-governmental organisation Brac has awarded 14 journalists for their work on the country's migration sector in the past year.

The Migration Media Award 2017 was handed over to the winners at a programme at the Brac Centre Inn on Wednesday.   

Abu Jar Ansar Uddin Ahammed of Samakal won the first prize in newspaper category while Dhaka Tribune's Adil Sakhawat and New Age's Muhammad Wasim Uddin Bhuiyan won second and third prize respectively.

Somoy TV's Ashish Kumar Sarker won the first prize in television media category with Jhumur Bari of Ekattor TV and Mashrek Rahat of Masranga TV came second and third respectively.

Dhaka Tribune's Md Fazlur Rahman got the first prize in online category while Md Kawsar Azam of The Report24.com and Jesmine Akhter of Benarnews.com got the second and the third prize respectively.

Saleh Noman of Radio Today was awarded in the radio news category while Kamrul Islam of Dainik Jalalabad was rewarded for his work on regional newspaper category.

This was the first time photojournalists were awarded with Prothom Alo's Syful Islam and Abdus Salam receiving the first and second prizes respectively while Al Jazeera and Dhaka Tribune's photojournalist Mahmud Hossain Opu got the third prize.

Abdus Salam got the award for his photo album styled “Persecution of Rohingyas” published on Prothom Alo English .

Expatriates' welfare and overseas employment minister Nurul Islam handed over the prizes to the winners. Writer and journalist Anisul Hoque, International Organisation for Migration deputy chief of mission Abdusattor Esoev, Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training director general Md Selim reza were also present on the occasion while head of Brac's migration programme Shariful Hasan read out the keynote paper on the media's role in safeguarding rights of the migrant workers.
