2 killed in Rajshahi, Lakshmipur ‘gunfights’

Two men were killed in separate incidents of reported gunfights in Lakshmipur and Rajshahi early Friday, reports UNB.

In Lakshmipur, an alleged robber, identified as Nurul Alam alias Nuru, son of certain Samsuddoha of East Zafarpur village in Sadar upazila, was killed in a reported gunfight with police.

Being tipped off that a gang of robbers gathered for committing robberies, police conducted a drive in Chandraganj Ganipur area around 3:30am.

Sensing the law enforcers’ presence, the robbers opened fire on the police, prompting them to retaliate which triggered the gunfight leaving Nuru dead on the spot, said Zafar Ahmed, the officer-in-charge of Chandraganj police station.

Nuru was a top listed robber and wanted in six cases, the OC added.

Other members of the gang managed to flee the scene. Two policemen-Rafikullah and Rubel-were injured in the incident, claimed police.

One LG gun, one gun and five bullets were recovered from the spot.

A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Charghat upazila of Rajshahi early Friday.

The identities of the deceased could not be known yet, reports UNB.

Tipped off that some robbers were preparing to commit robbery, a team of rab-5 conducted a raid at Hazir Dhalan Beel around 12:30am, said deputy commander of RAB-5, major Ashraful Islam.

Sensing the presence of the elite force, according to the RAB official, the robbers opened fire on them prompting them to retaliate that triggered the gunfight.

After a brief gunfight, the RAB members arrested a robber as he suffered bullet wounds while the others managed to flee.

Later, he was taken to Charghat Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

Four RAB members were injured in the incident, RAB added.

RAB also said one firearm and some sharp weapons and bullets were recovered from the spot.

The law enforcement’s versions of the events were, however, not verified independently as no versions of the incidents were available immediately either from any witnesses or from any members of the victims’ family.
