10 apparel companies awarded

The government on Saturday awarded 10 apparel companies for maintaining high safety and workers' health standards in their factories, reports UNB.

The award titled 'Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Good Practice Award' has been given to garments companies named Wisdom Attires, Fakir Fashion, Knit Concern, Hop Lun Apparels, Square Fashion, Snowtex Outwear, Ecotext, Tarasima Apparels, Viyellatex and AKH Eco Apparels at a ceremony held at the Krishibid Institute on the occasion of national day on occupational safety and health.

Handing over the awards, state minister for ministry of labour and employment Mujibul Haque praised the companies for their effort to maintain a good work environment for their workers.

"Workplace accidents and injuries occur due to lack of awareness of employers and workers. Our industrial growth and productivity will increase hastily if awareness on workplace safety can be enhanced," he said.

Mujibul Haque said the ILO introduced World Safety Day in 2003 and since 2016 they have started observing this day in Bangladesh.

Canadian High Commissioner in Dhaka Benoit Prefontaine, secretary of the labour and employment ministry Afroza Khan, Officer-in-charge of ILO Bangladesh Gagan Rajbhandari, among others spoke at the ceremony.
