4 outsiders held over attack on DU VC’s residence

Detectives have arrested four young men from the city's Chankharpool over the attack on the residence of Dhaka University vice-chancellor during protests against the existing quota system in public service, according to UNB.

The arrestees are M Rakibul Hasan aka Rakib, 26, M Masud Alam aka Masud, 25, M Ali Hossain Sheikh aka Ali, 28, and Abu Sayeed Fazle Rabbi alias Siam, 20.

A team of Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP, South) arrested them on Sunday afternoon, said DMP deputy commissioner (media) Masudur Rahman.

Two mobile phone sets stolen during the attack were also recovered from their possession, he said, adding that no one of them is the student of Dhaka University.

In the early hours 19 April, a group of people during a protest demanding reforms in the quota system in public service broke the main entrance of the VC's residence and ransacked several rooms and furniture. They also set fire to two vehicles parked inside the VC residence.

A case was filed with Shahbagh police station on 10 April over the incident.
