UN calls for fair polls in Bangladesh

UNB . Dhaka | Update:

The United Nations has reiterated its call for the necessity of holding free and fair elections in Bangladesh and showing respect for the need.

“We continue to call for the need for all parties and all authorities to respect the need for free and fair elections in Bangladesh and will continue to do that,” deputy spokesman for the UN secretary general Farhan Haq told a Bangladeshi questioner at a regular briefing at the UN headquarters on Tuesday.

The United Nations also drew the attention of all political parties and authorities for holding the fair polls.

The United Nations came up with the call when Awami League nominated mayor candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque won with a big margin in Tuesday’s Khulna City Corporation elections.

The BNP alleged that the KCC elections were marred by irregularities including ballot stuffing and driving out polling agents of the rival group while ruling party criticised BNP for misleading people and asked the party to take a lesson from the Khulna City Corporation elections.
