The government has decided to stop the movement of trucks, vans and lorries on the highways three days before Eid-ul-Fitr to ensure hassle-free travel for home-goers.

Road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader made the announcement at a programme in Gazipur on Saturday.

The minister, however, said the vehicles carrying perishable goods, readymade garment products and drugs will remain out of the purview of this decision.

Earlier, Obaidul Quader attended a discussion at the SASEC (South Asian Sub-regional Economic Cooperation) road connectivity project  contractor’s office at Kaliakoir in Gazipur to devise ways to reduce tailback on the Dhaka-Tangail highways. Officials of the highway department, the district administration and the police were present.

The minister said the engineers were asked to finish repair work of all roads within eight days and keep the roads in working condition.

Obaidul Quader inspected the work progress of the four-lane Dhaka-Tangail highway at Chandra of Gazipur.
