Current mode of demo not enough to see off autocracy: Moudud
BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed on Wednesday said the principal opposition party will make a shift in its course of movement to ensure release of party leader Khaleda Zia.
"We'll have to free our leader Khaleda Zia from jail, and we'll change our current nature of movement, if necessary. We'll come up with effective programmes to ensure her release," he said.
The BNP leader came up with the observation while addressing a press conference at the BNP's Nayapaltan central office.
The leaders of greater Noakhali arranged the press meet protesting at what they said 'confining' Moudud Ahmed by the police at his village home on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Mentioning that it will not be possible to ensure the fall of the current 'autocratic' government through a peaceful movement, Moudud said their party will announce the proper action programmes at a suitable time to force the government to quit and hold a fair and credible election.
"Have patience for a few more days. We'll wage a movement like 1969 and the 1990 to ensure the fall of the current autocratic government," he said pointing at his party colleagues.
Former BNP MPs from the greater Noakhali, including Barkatullah Bulu, Mohammad Shahjahan, Zainul Abdin Farroque, Abul Khair Buiyan, Mahbub Uddin Khokon, ABM Ashrafuddin Nizan, Rehana Akhter Ranu and Nazimuddin Ahmed, also spoke.
They alleged that the police confined Moudud to his residence at Companiganj, Noakhali, on the Eid day at the 'behest of the Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader'.
They strongly condemned the incident and accused Quader of destroying the tradition of political coexistence.
Moudud said he was barred from joining the main eid congregation in his constituency and exchanging greetings with party leaders and activists by police. "I was not allowed to join any iftar party in my area as I was confined to my house on the eid day."
He also alleged that his electoral opponent Obaidul Quader did it as he has lost ground beneath his feet.
