German embassy expresses concern at attacks on peaceful protests

The German embassy in Dhaka on Wednesday has expressed concern at attacks on peaceful protests in Bangladesh in the last few days, news agency UNB reports.

In a post on its verified Facebook page, the embassy said it has "with great concern" followed the brutal attacks on peaceful protesters during the last few days.

Stating that freedom of speech and freedom of opinion are constitutional rights of the citizens in this country, it said such attacks belittle the rule of law of this country.

"Attacks and repression aimed at denying these rights undermine the rule of law and run counter to the founding principles of Bangladesh," the Embassy said in the Facebook post.

The post came after attacks on quota reform activists in Dhaka and different parts of the country in the last few days.

Students under the banner of ‘Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad’ have been pressing for their demand for reforms in existing quota system in government jobs.

Ruling party student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League men reportedly carried out attack on them on campuses across the country.
Law enforcers also foiled a rally of guardians and teachers at National Press Club on Tuesday organised to protest attack on students.
