A court in Narail on Tuesday denied bail to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in a defamation suit filed over her comments on number of freedom fighters and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Judge Jahidul Azad, senior judicial magistrate of Narail court, passed the order.

The former prime minister, Khaleda Zia, has been in jail as she was convicted in a graft case by a lower court in Dhaka on 8 February.

On 2 July, the Narail court ended the hearing and kept it pending to pass the order.

On 5 June, judge Sheikh Abdul Ahad of the District and Session's Judge court denied her bail mentioning it 'not maintainable'.

On 21 December 2015, Khaleda Zia at a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh raised questions about the actual number of liberation war martyrs saying, "There're controversies over how many were martyred in the liberation war. There're also many books and documents on the controversies."

Reacting to Khaleda remarks, Raihan Farooque Imam of Naragati filed a case with the Cognisance Court on 24 December 2015.
