Two people were killed in a reported gunfight with a joint team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Marine Drive in Himchhari area of Cox's Bazar early Thursday.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately, reports UNB.

The joint forces team gave a signal to a Cox’s Bazar-bound white car to stop around 4:00am at a check-post set up in the area, additional superintendent of Cox's Bazar police Afrozul Haq Tutul said.

Defying the signal, the car was moving on. Then RAB members pursued the car. At one stage, the criminal opened fire on them, prompting the law enforcement to fire back that triggered a gunfight.

Later, the joint forces rescued the two people with bullet injuries and took them to a local hospital where doctors declared them dead.

The law enforcement’s version of the incident was, however, not verified independently as no version of it was available immediately either from any witnesses or from members of the victim’s family.
