EW, NSU students clash with attackers, cops

Students of East West and North South universities locked into clashes with police and attackers in front of their campuses in the city's Aftabnagar and Bashundhara Gate area on Mondayduring their demonstrations protesting at Saturday's attacks on students at Jhigatala.

Witnesses said when a group of students of East West University gathered in front of the university around 10:30am, police lobbed teargas shells to disperse them, reports UNB.

A chase and counter-chase took place between the police and the students, said witnesses.

A teacher of the university wishing anonymity said police lobbed teargas shells at intervals inside the university.

The law enforcers along with some attackers wearing helmets attacked general students in front of the campus, according to the teacher.

The attackers hurled brickbats at the students who took shelter inside the university campus. The students also hurled brickbats targeting the attackers in a counter-attack.

A student of the university said the situation is getting worse as police beat up general students and picked some of them up.

The sporadic clashes among the students, police and miscreants continued till 2 pm.

Besides, a clash broke out among the students of North South University (NSU), police and attackers when the students took position near Bashundhara Gate and staged demonstrations protesting Sunday's attack on students in Jigatola area of the capital.

Police lobbed tear gas shells to disperse them while the miscreants equipped with sticks chased the students.

Besides, several hundred students of Dhaka University staged demonstrations on the campus protesting the attack on the students and demanding resignation of Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan atnoon.

UNB Shahjalal University correspondent reports:, students gathered in front of the main gate of the university around 10:00am and locked the gate as part of their protests against attack on students.

They brought out a protest rally and expressed solidarity with the students of schools, colleges and universities in front of central Shaheed Minar in Chowhatta area of the city.

The protesting school and college students, who were managing traffic at Jigatala intersection and Mirpur in the capital, came under attackon Saturdaywhich left an unspecified number of students injured.
