Tangail arson mastermind still at large

The mastermind of the arson attack that left a woman and her three daughters dead at Sohagpara village in Mirzapur upazila on Tuesday was yet to be arrested as of Thursday night.

Meanwhile, Abu Hanif, younger brother of the mastermind Jahangir Hossain, was placed on a three-day remand on Thursday.

Besides, rickshaw-puller Mohammad Ali made a confessional statement before the court under section 164.

Sub-inspector Shyamal Kumar Dutta of Mirzapur Police Station, also the investigation officer of the case, said the court granted a three-day remand for Hanif when they produced him before it seeking a seven-day remand.

In his statement, Ali told the court that Jahangir went to local Maasranga Filling Station around 11pm on the fateful night and bought petrol from there.

On their return trip, Jahangir kept the petrol jar by a wall of the house of the victims and drove him away after paying Tk 200 as fare, he said.

Hasna Begum, 30, wife of Mujibur Rahman, a Malaysia expatriate, and their daughters - Mariam, 14, Mali, 4, Mim 6, of South Shohagpara village were burned to death early Tuesday as miscreants set fire to their house following previous enmity.

Hasna’s brother Mofazzal Hossain filed the case with Mirzapur Police Station on Tuesday night.
