Saber elected IPU president

The ruling lawmaker Saber Hossain Chowdhury has been elected president of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for the next three years.

Mr. Chowdhury also the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Textiles and Jute won the post defeating three other contestants on the concluding day of the five day 131 conference of IPU held in Geneva, Switzerland on Thursday.

In the election, Saber secured 169 votes and his nearest contestant parliament speaker of Australia Bronwyn Bishop got 95 votes, a parliament secretariat press release said in Dhaka.

Saber Hossain is the first Bangladeshi to win the IPU post.
