I am nothing without my music: Nancy
Singer Nazmun Munira Nancy, simply known as Nancy, recently won the Meril Prothom Alo 'Best Singer Award: Female' for the sixth time.
She opened up to Prothom Alo about her life in music.
How are you?
I’m doing well, but I’m very busy.
What keeps you busy?
I’m in Mymensingh now, looking over the construction of our new house. My husband Zayed is busy in his office; hence I have to take charge. I am running between Dhaka and Mymensingh and this will continue for next four months.
How are you making time for recording and shows?
I usually complete multiple recordings at a time. I’m trying to be very selective about the live shows, and coordinating my time with the time of the organisers. I’m used to such kind of time management as I followed the same routine during the construction of my home at Netrokona.Once the construction is completed, hopefully, I’ll be able to focus solely on my music. You know, I’m nothing without my music.
You won the Meril-Prothom Alo 'Best Female Singer Award' for the sixth time. How would you describe your feelings about it?
Meril-Prothom Alo award is one of the most prestigious awards in the cultural sphere of Bangladesh. Winning it six times by popular choices,is a matter of great honour. It makes me more responsible towards my music. I was awarded for a song titled “Bhalobashle bojha ki jay”. I thank the lyricist Kobir Bokul and composer Shawkat Ali Emon, and everyone who voted for me.
You won the national award in 2011. But you did not attend the award giving ceremony which raised a lot of criticisms. Would you like to comment on that?
I was very excited about winning my first national award. Unfortunately my daughter Rodela fell ill a day before the ceremony. I immediately informed a senior official of the information ministry, and he understood the gravity of the situation. As a mother, nothing comes to me before my children. So, I chose to be at home with my ailing child. However, many media personalities and news media spread made-up stories about my absence without checking any fact. I was very upset by the whole incident.
Recently you recorded a new song about your mother…
I sang two more songs about by mother, but this is the first one to make it to an album. I released the previous one on facebook. I’m very sensitive when it comes to singing about my mother. I never charge any money for these songs.
What about your new projects?
Discussions about singing in a few mixed albums for Eid is going on. My first Nazrul song album is underway as well. I also voiced in a few commercial’s jingles and playbacks composed by Habib Wahid.
