Yunus' penalty cancelled in labour law case

Dr Mohammad Yunus has been acquitted of the penalty delivered by the labour court in a case filed over the violation of the labour law.

The Labour Appeal Tribunal on Wednesday delivered this verdict over hearing an appeal against the penalty.

Dr Yunus' lawyer Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed this to Prothom Alo.

Dhaka's third labour court sentenced six months each to four people including Grameen Telecom chairman Dr Mohammad Yunus on charges of violation of labour law on 1 January. The Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments filed the case. Besides, each was fined Tk 30,000.


Other accused are managing director of Grameen Telecom Ashraful Hasan and its directors Nurzahan Begum and Shahjahan.

Four people including Yunus appealed against the verdict on 28 January. The Labour Appeal Tribunal accepted the appeal for hearing on the day. After hearing, the tribunal acquitted four including Dr Muhammad Yunus.
