The 25th death anniversary of Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam, who spearheaded the movement for trial of the war criminals, will be observed in the country on Wednesday.

Jahanara Imam, the mother of martyred Shafi Imam Rumi, along with pro-liberation politicians, prominent cultural personalities and intellectuals floated the Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee (the committee for annihilation of the killers and collaborators of 1971) on 19 January in 1992.

The Nirmul Committee held symbolic trial of Ghulam Azam in a Gana Adalat (mass court) at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan on 26 March in 1992 awarding the Jamaat leader with capital punishment.

After leading the movement for two and a half years, eminent writer and social worker Jahanara Imam breathed her last due to cancer on 26 June in 1994.

Different socio-cultural organisations will observe the day through various programmes.

Jahanara Imam was born in Murshidabad of West Bengal in India on 3 May in 1929.

Her book ‘Ekattorer Dinlipi’ is recognised as a document of the liberation war.
