Three youths reportedly died after taking alcohol in Kushtia town on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Jihadur Rahman Sajid, 20, son of late Mofiz Rahman of Amlapara; Fahim Hossain, 21, son of Sagor Hossain of Thanapara; and Pavel Islam, 20, son of Arman Islam of the town.

Family sources said six friends, including the 3 deceased, gathered at the public library playground to celebrate Fahim's birthday on Thursday afternoon. At one stage, they had some alcohol mixed with Speed energy drink.

Few moments later, they all fell sick and went to Kushtia General Hospital.

Dr Taposh Kumar Sarkar, resident medical officer at the hospital, said they came to the hospital and informed the doctor about their malaise. In further interrogation by the doctor, they admitted taking alcohol.

However, the three died while undergoing treatment here, said the doctor, adding that two others are still being treated at the hospital while one has been transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Mustafizur Rahman, additional superintendent of Kushtia police, confirmed the news, saying they are looking into how they got alcohol.

A man was taken to police custody for interrogation, he added.
