Alleged gunfights claim 4 more lives

Four people were killed in what the law enforcement claims to be gunfights in Jashore and Mymensingh early Saturday.

Our Jashore correspondent reported that the deceased are Abul Kalam, 47, son of one Kader Ali Morol, Habibur Rahman, 38, son of Abdul Barik Sheikh and Milon Kansari, 40, son of one Abdus Sattar Kansari and all of them are from Nawapara village of the Abhaynagar upazila.

Abhaynagar police station officer-in-charge Sheikh Gani Mia claimed that the deceased were terrorists and were killed in gunfights with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

The three were killed in a “gunfight” with a team of RAB-6 in Kadamtali area of Bagdah village of the upazila around 3:15am, said the law enforcement.

“RAB men have handed over the bodies to us this morning. The bodies have been kept at the police station,” said Abhaynagar police station officer-in-charge Sheikh Gani Mia.

“We are processing to send the bodies to Jashore 250 bed general hospital morgue,” he added.

Meanwhile, a detained murder accused was killed in an alleged gunfight with detectives in Chowrasta area of Nandail upazila in Mymensingh district early Saturday, according to UNB news agency.

The deceased is Emon, son of a certain Nurul Islam, from Kolapara village of the upazila.

Detective Branch (DB) of police claimed the deceased was accused in several murder cases.

Police arrested Emon in connection with the murder of an auto-rickshaw driver Rana after snatching his vehicle on 17 May, said DB officer-in-charge of the district Ashikur Rahman.

According to his claim, Emon’s associates opened fire on police when  a DB team conducted a drive around 2:30am along with Emon for arresting other criminals, prompting them to retaliate that triggered the gunfight.

Emon sustained bullet injuries on his chest during the gunfight.

He was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where physicians declared him dead, OC Ashikur said.

The law enforcement’s versions of the events were, however, not verified independently as no version of the incident was available immediately either from any witness or from the victim’s family.

Earlier, three people were killed in gunfights with RAB members in Chattogram and Chapainawabganj districts on Thursday night and Friday.
