35 hurt in post-polls violence in 2 dists
At least 35 people were injured in post-election violence in Brahmanbaria and Jhenidah districts on Friday.
In Brahmanbaria, 30 people were injured in a clash between two groups of Awami League activists at Durgarampur village in Ashuganj upazila, reports news agency UNB.
Witnesses said an altercation ensued between the supporters of newly elected AL-backed Durgarampur Union Parishad chairman Sazu Khan and AL rebel candidate Moazzem Hosaain Mazu over the polls results around 8 am.
At one stage, both groups attacked each other with lethal weapons, leaving 30 people injured.
The injured were rushed to different clinics and hospitals.
In Jhenidah, five people were injured in a clash between the supporters of Awami League-backed chairman candidate and AL rebel candidate at Banshbaria village in Maheshpur upazila.
The clash broke out when supporters of defeated AL-backed candidate Masudur Rahman swooped on the supporters of AL rebel candidate Abdul Malek following his victory in the morning that left five people injured, said Prabir Kumar, officer-in-charge of Maheshpur Police Station.
Later, their supporters also vandalised 5/6 houses in the area.
Meanwhile, Border Guards Bangladesh members have been deployed in the area apprehending further trouble.
