Chief of Army Staff General Waker-uz-Zaman paid courtesy calls today, Monday, on President Mohammed Shahabuddin and the head of the interim government, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
General Waker briefed the President and the Chief Adviser about his recent visit to China during the meetings.
According to a responsible source, the army chief met the President at Bangabhaban around 11:00am. As per protocol, whenever the army chief goes abroad on an official visit, he must brief the President, the supreme commander of the armed forces, upon returning.
During the meeting, General Waker also informed President Shahabuddin about the country’s law and order situation and the activities of the army in maintaining it, the source added.
After meeting the President, the army chief went to the Chief Adviser’s office at around 12:00 noon to meet Professor Yunus. In this meeting as well, he briefed the Chief Adviser on his China visit and discussed issues relating to law and order.
General Waker went to China on an official visit on 20 August. According to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release issued on 28 August, he returned home on the night of 27 August. During his stay, he paid courtesy call to senior Chinese military and civilian officials, including General Chen Hui, political commissar of the People's Liberation Army Ground Force. They discussed various issues related to bilateral interest.
It is to mention that the army chief met Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed at his residence on last Sunday, where they discussed legal and other issues.
According to sources, the meetings of the army chief with the President, the Chief Adviser, and the Chief Justice were in accordance with rules and established practice. The meetings were held in a cordial atmosphere. Yet, many are creating speculation and confusion over these meetings, which are completely baseless.
