The government extended the tenure of incumbent inspector general of police, Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, by one and half years more on contract basis.

The national election is likely to be held at the end of the current year or at the beginning of the next year.

So, the gazette notification issued on Monday from the public administration ministry made it clear that Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun will hold the IGP post until the next national elections.

He, an official of BCS 8th batch, was set to retire from the government service on 11 January this year. But the government decided to keep him at IGP post until 11 July 2024.

Earlier, on 22 September, the government appointed director general of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun as the new IGP.
