7 Shibir workers sentenced to 20 yrs
A Rangpur court on Tuesday sentenced seven leaders and workers of Islami Chhatra Shibir to 20 years rigorous imprisonment in a case filed under the explosive act.
Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir is the student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, an ally of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Additional district and sessions judge Abu Jafar Md Kamruzzaman passed the order.
The convicts are: Ahsan Habib, Mostafa Kamal, Mehedi Hasan, also known as Taohid Iqbal Sourav, Rabiul Islam, Monowar Hossain, Jamirul Islam, also known as Abdullah, and Moynul Islam.
Of them, Mehedi Hasan is the president of Shibir’s Carmichael College unit of the student organisation. Ahsan Habib and Mostafa Kamal are now behind bars while the rest are absconding.
Two of the Shibir activists were arrested “with locally made bombs” at a student hostel in Lalbagh College Para of the city on 18 March 2013 while five of their companions managed to flee the scene.
Law enforcers filed one case under the explosive substances act on the same day.
The public prosecutor said the court also fined Tk 10,000 each, in default, to serve one year more in prison.
Meanwhile, Jamaat in a statement said, “Injustice was made to the seven Shibir workers by sentencing them to 20 years in jail in false case.”
