State minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam has said the government will examine as to why Bangladesh ambassador to Moscow, Kamrul Ahsan, was summoned.

The state minister made the remark while answering queries from newsmen at the foreign ministry on Wednesday.

Bangladeshi ambassador to Moscow Kamrul Ahsan was summoned to the Russian foreign ministry on Tuesday as part of a protest against the government's decision not to allow Russian ships under the US sanction to dock at Bangladesh ports.

When asked about the matter, Shahriar Alam said, "We have asked for detailed reports from our ambassador. We will analyse what discussion took place there. Here not only (summon), more bilateral issues have been discussed there."

The state minister said that a complex situation has been created over the Ukraine-Russia war.

The Russian foreign ministry told the Bangladesh ambassador that Bangladesh's step runs counter to the traditionally friendly character of bilateral relations and can have a negative effect on the prospects for the bilateral cooperation in various spheres according to a statement of Russian foreign ministry.

Last week, Russia’s embassy in Dhaka confirmed to TASS that 69 Russian ships had been barred from calling at the country’s ports.

After Russia carried out attack on Ukraine on 24 February 2022, many ships of Russia came under sanctions by the US and its allies.

Meanwhile, the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom of Russia has been constructing a nuclear power plant in Rooppur. The power plant is suppose to generate electricity from 2024. Different equipment of the power plant are sent from Russia.

A Russian ship with equipment for Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant was supposed to dock at Mongla port in December 2022. But the USA informed the Bangladesh government that the ship was under the sanction. After verifying the matter, Bangladesh didn't allow the ship to dock. Later, the ship went to Haldia port in West Bengal of India. Finally the ship returned to Russia as it couldn't get permission to dock there too.
