AL declares names of candidates for district council polls
Bangladesh Awami League (AL) yesterday declared the names of the party-backed candidates for the upcoming district council polls slated for 28 December.
The names were announced after an adjourned meeting of the AL Local Government Nomination Board held at Ganabhaban, the official residence of the prime minister, here tonight.
Prime minister and AL president Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting.
The names of the candidates in Rangpur division are: Md Abu Bakar Siddiq (Panchagarh), Muhammad Sadek Qoraishi (Thakurgaon), Md Zafar Ali (Kurigram), Syed Shamsul Alam (Gaibandha), Md Matiar Rahman (Lalmonirhat), Azizul Islam Chowdhury (Dinajpur) and Safia Khanam (Rangpur).
The candidates in Rajshahi division are: Mohammad Rezaul Rahim Lal (Pabna), Md Mainudddin Mandal (Chapainawabganj), Md Maqbul Hossain (Bogra), Sazedur Rahman Khan (Natore), Mahbub Zaman Bhulu (Rajshahi), Md Arifur Rahman Rocket (Joypurhat), AKM Fazley Rabbi (Naogaon) and Abdul Latif Biswas (Sirajganj).
The candidates in Khulna division are: Sheikh Qamruzzaman Tuku (Bagerhat), Shah Hadiuzzaman (Jessore), Hazi Rabiul Islam (Kushtia), Munsur Ahmed (Satkhira), Advocate Md Miazan Ali (Meherpur), Mahfuzur Rahman Manzu (Chuadanga), Syed Ayub Ali (Narail), Sheikh Harunur Rashid (Khulna), Pankaj Kumar Kundu (Magura) and Kanak Kanti Das (Jhenidah).
The candidates in Barisal division are : Md Delwar Hossain (Barguna), Khan Altaf Hossain (Barisal), Md Shah Alam (Pirojpur), Abdul Momin Tulu (Bhola), Alhaj Khan Mosharraf Hossain (Patukhali) and Sardar Md Shah Alam (Jhalakathi).
The candidates in Dhaka division are : Fazlur Rahman Faruk (Tangail), Golam Mohiuddin (Manikganj), Mahbubur Rahman (Dhaka), Alhaj Md Mohiuddin (Munshiganj), Akhtaruzzaman (Gazipur), Advocate Md Asaduzzaman (Narsingdi), Md Zillur Rahman (Kishoreganj), Lokman Hossain Mridha (Faridpur), Fakir Abdul Jabbar (Rajbari), Miajuddin Khan (Madaripur), Sabedur Rahman Khoka Shikdar (Shariatpur), Chowdhury Emdadul Haque (Gopalganj) and Alhaj Anwar Hossain (Narayanganj). The candidates in Mymensingh division are : Yusuf Khan Pathan (Mymensingh), Chandan Kumar Paul (Sherpur), Md HR Zahid Anwar (Jamalpur) and Prashanta Kumar Roy (Netrakona).
The candidates in Sylhet division are: Md Lutfor Rahman (Sylhet), Dr Md Mushfik Hussain Chowdhury (Habiganj), Azizur Rahman (Moulvibazar) and Enamul Kabir Emon (Sunamganj).
The candidates in Chittagong division are: Md Abdus Salam (Chittagong), Dr ABM Zafar Ullah (Noakhali), Moshtaque Ahmed Chowdhury (Cox’s Bazar), Syed AKM Emdadul Bari (Brahmmanbaria), Md Shamsul Islam (Lakkhipur), Abu Taher (Comilla), Aziz Ahmed (Feni) and M Abu Osman Chowdhury (Chandpur).
Briefing reporters after the meeting, AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader said the party has extended support to those candidates who are dedicated to the organisation and who did not become ministers or MPs.
“At the directives of the party president, we have given support to those who are dedicated and who did not become president or general secretary or did not become ministers or MPs after analysis and enquiry ... and we took two days for the discussion,” he said.
On Nov 20, Chief Election Commission Kazi Raqibuddin Ahmed declared the schedule for polls in 61 districts barring the three in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT).
As per the schedule, the last day for filing nomination papers is 1 December and the papers will be scrutinized on 3 and 4 December.
The last day for withdrawal of candidature is 11 December, while the candidates will be allocated poll symbols on 12 December.
According to the amended law, a district council will have 21 members, including one chairman, 15 general members and five female members (reserved).
They will be elected with the votes of city corporation mayors and councilors, upazila council chairmen and vice-chairmen, ward councilors, municipality mayors and councilors and union council chairmen and members.
Nomination papers for district council polls could be submitted directly or online. A candidate can submit nomination papers online going to the EC website.
