Atiur leaves for Manila to receive Gusi Peace Prize

Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Dr Atiur Rahman left here on Sunday for Manila to receive the Gusi Peace Prize International for 2014.

Atiur Rahman is one of the 15 recipients of this year award. The other winners are from Austria, China, Congo, Germany, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Nepal, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Poland and Saudi Arabia. He is the second Bangladeshi as the winner of the award.

The award will be handed over to the laureates at a colorful award giving ceremony at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) on November 26 in Manila, said a BB press release today.

The Gusi Peace Prize, one of the foremost peace prize in Asia and the whole world given by Gusi Peace Prize International, based in Manila, the Philippines.

In 2002, Gusi Peace Foundation introduced the peace award in the name of Javier Gusi who was a participant of Guerrilla war against Japan in the Second World War, turned politician, and became popular for his fight for human rights.

The governor will participate in various pre-event talks and sessions as a part of the Gusi awarding ceremony. During the visit, Atiur Rahman is scheduled to meet the Governor of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (Central Bank of Philippines) Amando M. Tetangco.

Besides, he will also deliver a speech on "Financial Inclusion and Sustainable Development" at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Head Quarter, Manila.

Dr Atiur Rahman will return home on November 28.
