Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leaders and activists formed a human chain in the city on Wednesday protesting start of the 11th parliament, reports UNB.

Leaders and followers of the party formed the human chain around 10:30am in front of the National Press Club 30 minutes before the scheduled time and ended around 11:56am.

Following the human chain, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Abdul Moyeen Khan Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain were, among others, addressed the programme.

The leaders and activists chanted different slogans demanding reelection and release of their chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail.

Meanwhile, a huge number of law enforcers were deployed around the press club to fend off any trouble.

On Tuesday, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the programme at a press conference at BNP's Nayapaltan central office.

The maiden session of the 11th parliament will begin at 3:00pm on Wednesday, within 31 days of the national election held on 30 December with the participation of all the registered political parties.

Awami League, led by Sheikh Hasina, formed the government for the third consecutive term following its landslide victory in the national election.

Turning down the election results with the allegation of 'massive vote robbery', BNP demanded reelection.

Eight MPs of the party and its alliance partner Gano Forum elected in the election have not taken oath yet.
