Bandhu gets Hero Award for working with Hijra community

Bandhu Social Welfare Society (BSWS) has received the ‘Hero Award’ for working to ensure the rights of gender diversified communities and its contribution to HIV/AIDS prevention among them.

The award was handed over to Bandhu’s executive director Saleh Ahmed at a programme in Bangkok, Thailand on 12 November, says a press release issued on 13 November.

The award was given by Asia Pacific Coalition on Male Sexual Health (APCOM), which works among the gender diversified community, marking its 10th anniversary.

The ‘Hero Award’ is regarded as a prestigious recognition for contributions of individuals and organisations who have worked improving the lives of gender diverse people affected by HIV/AIDS throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Of the 350 individuals and organisations nominated from Asia-Pacific, seven individuals and organisations received awards in seven categories.

Bandhu received the award in the best organisation category.

Bandhu has been working to preserve health rights and improving the quality of life of Hiijra and gender diversified communities in Bangladesh since 1996.
