Election commissioner Mahbub Talukder on Friday said the elections to Barishal city corporation would be a better one than the elections to Rajshahi and Sylhet city corporations.

The three city corporations are going to polls on 30 July.

The election commissioner was briefing newsmen after a views exchange meeting with the mayoral candidates at the regional election office in Kashipur of Barishal.

“The candidates have given the assurance that they will cooperate with election commission. The officials involved with electoral process should keep in mind that they are working under the EC and should discharge their duty accordingly,” said Mahbub.

Terming the election atmosphere in Barishal a favourable one, Mahbub hoped that the city would see a free, fair and neutral election on 30 July.

Asked about the complaints of different candidates over violation of electoral rules, the commissioner said, “We’ve received some complaints and we’re working to address them.”

He, however, stressed the need for creating awareness among the people to curb irregularities in the balloting.

Chaired by the returning officer for Barishal polls, Md Mujibur Rahman, several mayoral candidates, including BNP’s Mujibur Rahman Sarwar, Awami League’s Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah, Jatiya Party’s Iqbal Hossain, Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal’s Manisha Chakrabarty, joined the meeting.
