Eight charged with Prof Rezaul killing

Police have pressed charges against eight persons in a case filed in connection with the killing of Rajshahi University teacher Prof Rezaul Karim Siddiquee, reports news agency UNB.

Rezaus Sadique, inspector of Detective Branch of Police and also investigation officer of the case, submitted a charge-sheet before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Sunday, six months after the killing, said Iftekhar Alam, senior assistant commissioner and spokesperson of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police.

The court fixed 8 November to decide whether it will accept the charge-sheet.

The accused are Khairul Alam Badal, Osman, Nazrul Islam, Shariful Islam, Ripon, Abdus Sattar, Rahmatullah and Maskawat. Of them, Badal, Nazrul and Osman were killed in gunfights with police in different times and Shariful has been on the run.

Police claimed that all of them are members of banned militant Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

Prof Rezaul Karim, 58, of the RU English Department, was killed by miscreants in the city’s Shalbagan area on 23 April last.

Victim’s son Sourov Hossain filed a murder case with Boalia police station.
