Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday assured Bangladesh of providing more assistance on the Rohingya issue.

The Turkish president made the assurance during a bilateral meeting with his Bangladesh counterpart Md Abdul Hamid on the sidelines of the Extra-ordinary Summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at Istanbul Congress and Exhibition Centre (ICECA), reports BSS.

Erdogan also lauded the initiative of the Bangladesh government regarding the Rohingya issue.

President Hamid expressed gratitude to his Turkish counterpart for providing heartfelt support to the issue of displaced Rohingyas, who took shelter in Bangladesh, being the worst victims of the military atrocities in Maynmar’s Rakhine state in recent time.

“The friendly and bilateral relations between the two countries are increasing day by day and it would continue in future,” Abdul Hamid hoped.

He sought support and cooperation of the Turkish leader to elect Bangladeshi candidate to the post of OIC assistant secretary general for science and technology affairs.

He also thanked the Turkish president for arranging such a time-befitting special OIC summit to raise strong protest against the United States declaration recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and launching a move to shift its embassy there.

The Turkey President said his country attaches priority to enhance bilateral relations in all aspects.

Erdogan termed the relations between Turkey and Bangladesh as friendly and hoped it would reach a new height with Muslim countries in coming days.

He also stressed the need for using the potentials of the two countries.

Later, Sudan president Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir held a bilateral meeting with president Abdul Hamid on the sidelines of the OIC summit in Istanbul in the afternoon.

During the meeting, the Sudanese president lauded the role of Bangladesh peacekeepers’ role in the United Nations peacekeeping missions in different countries across the world.

He also said the peacekeepers are playing very significant roles in the internal development of the country.

President Abdul Hamid thanked his Sudanese counterpart mentioning the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries.
