Awami League-backed chairman candidate, who was injured in upazila election violence at Fakirhat, died on Tuesday morning under treatment.

Fakirhat upazila Awami League joint secretary Tushar Kumar Kunda confirmed the death to Prothom Alo.

The deceased, Sardar Niyamat Hossain, 56, was a chairman candidate in the upazila election held on 27 February.

On the day, some Awami League activists clashed with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) men over taking position by Awami League activists near a polling centre at Satshika Govt Primary School.

AL activists snatched ballot box as BGB men detained Niyamat Hossain and four others for their involvement in the incident. Later, voting was postponed in the centre.

It is alleged that Niyamat was beaten by BGB men. He was taken to the Fakirhat Upazila Health complex. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to a private hospital on 12 March in Khulna and on 15 March he was shifted to Bangabadhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Dhaka by helicopter.

Re-voting in the centre was held on 10 March. Niyamat Hossain announced to boycott the election from hospital.
