Poet and columnist Farhad Mazhar and his wife Farida Aktar were on Monday granted an eight-week anticipatory bail.

A High Court bench, comprising justice Krishna Debnath and justice Obaidul Hassan, handed down the order, asking the couple to surrender before the judicial court after the bail period ends.

The HC gave the verdict following their appeal to the court through their lawyer Md Asaduzzaman.

The police on 28 December 2017 sued the couple, accusing them of filing a case on the basis of false information and harassing the law enforcement.

Lawyers familiar to the case said the police on 7 December 2017 in the final report on his abduction sought permission for filing a case against Farhad Mazhar and his wife Farida Aktar.

Following the plea, the Detective Branch’s inspector Mahbubul Islam filed the case.

On 3 July, family members claimed that Farhad Mazhar had been kidnapped by unknown miscreants from Adabar in the capital in the early hours of the day.

Later, he was recused in Khulna and brought back to Dhaka.
