Fled DMCH doctors indicted in graft case

A Dhaka court on Tuesday framed charges against two physicians, who had fled the courtroom to escape capture, and others five former officials of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in a graft case.

Dhaka Senior Special Judge Mohammad Zahrul Haque framed the charges after rejecting their bail petitions.

The seven former DMCH officials are senior lecturer of Practical Pharmacy doctor Moshiur Rahman and assistant professor Atiar Rahman, DMCH director Brig Gen (retd) Bazle Qadir, assistant director Faizullah, accounts officer Nazrul Islam and cashier Nazrul Islam and Habibur Rahman, owner of Habib Surgical.

Of the indicted, doctors Moshiur Rahman and Atiar Rahman fled a Dhaka court following rejection of their bail petitions on August 27.

On 16 November 2011, assistant director of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case with Shahbagh police station accusing them of embezzling Tk 2.33 crore in connivance with each other in procuring medical instruments in fiscal 2009-10.

After an inquiry, ACC assistant director Fazlul Haque, also the investigation officer, submitted the charge sheet against the accused to the CMM court on May 15, this year.

Later, the CMM court transferred the case to Dhaka Senior Special Judge’s court for trial.

On August 27, police produced all the detainees before the designated trial court that ordered sending them back to jail rejecting their bail petitions.

However, Atiar Rahman was sent to jail when he surrendered before the court on September 7 while Moshiur Rahman remains absconding.
