Fugitive ex-SI Rezaul held, sent to jail

Police have arrested murder accused former sub-inspector M Rezaul Karim who fled from police custody on Sunday.

A team of Kotwali police station arrested the former SI of Kafrul police station, accused in a case filed in connection with the death of a trader in torture by police, from Court House Street area in Old Dhaka around 1:30pm on Monday.
Later, M Hayat Ali Khandaker, sub-inspector of the police station, produced him before a court which ordered keeping him in jail until the investigation into the murder incident concludes.
Dhaka’s additional chief metropolitan magistrate Ali Masud Sheikh also rejected a bail petition filed by Rezaul’s lawyer Mohammad Shahadat Hossain.
Earlier, Rezaul escaped on Sunday while he along with two other accused in the case was being taken to Dhaka central jail from Metropolitan Session’s Judge Court of Dhaka.
Sub-inspector Md Mufakkharul Islam, in-charge of Metropolitan Session’s Judge Court Prison Custody, filed a case against Rezaul with the Kotwali police station over the incident.
On Sunday, the three accused -- Rezaul Karim, another former SI of Kafrul police station M Nuruzzaman and police informant Babu alias Ratan alias Babu Miah -- surrendered before the Special Judge Court-5 of Mohammad Akteruzzaman.
The court framed charges against the accused and ordered sending them to jail rejecting their bail petitions.
However, Rezaul escaped before being taken to the prison van on the court premises.
