'Furious' police men assault bank officer

An officer of state-owned Sonali Bank was roughed up by two police men in the indusrtrial town of Tongi of Gazipur on Sunday morning, the authorities concerned confirmed.

Amir Hossain, a resident of Sataish bank colony area and an officer of the bank's National University branch in Gazipur, met with the incident in Sataish area of Tongi.

Amir Hossain said he started for office, hiring a rickshaw from near his residence around 9:00am. Sergeant Md Firoz and constable Shyamal Datta stopped his rickshaw when it reached the end of Sataish road.

The rickshaw puller had an altercation with the police men. Amir Hossain said he told the police men that he was leaving the rickshaw paying the rickshaw puller the fare.

“But the police men hurled abusive words at me. All of a sudden they turned furious and started beating me mercilessly. My shirt is torn apart and I am bleeding as my fingers are bruised,” Amir Hossain told Prothom Alo.

Witnesses said the people near the spot protested at the police assault and cordoned the police men.

However, members of the Tongi police and traffic police went there and rescued two police men.

They also sent the injured bank officer to the Tongi government hospital.

Gazipur traffic division inspector Md Sohrab Hossain said the police personnel have made excesses and they would be punished.

Gazipur traffic division assistant police superintendent Md Saleh Uddin Ahmed said sergeant Firoz and constable Shyamal have been withdrawn immediately and attached to Gazipur police line.
