HC bail for Tanvir upheld in Sagar-Runi murder case
The Appellate Division on Sunday turned a blind eye to a state plea seeking stay on the High Court’s interim order that had granted bail to Tanvir Rahman, a killer suspect now in custody, in the journalist couple Sagar Sarwar-Meherun Runi murder case.
Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Hasan Foez Siddique passed ‘no order’ upon a petition moved by the state.
Responding to a petition, an HC division bench on December 2 granted an interim bail to detained Tanvir till submission of the police report over the case.
After the High Court interim order, the state filed a petition with the SC seeking stay on the HC bail order.
Fawzia Karim, the counsel for Tanvir, told reporters that after the day’s SC stand there is no bar to her client’s release from custody.
Sagar Sarowar, news editor at private TV channel Maasranga, and his wife Meherun Runi, a senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were killed on February 11, 2012 at their rented apartment in the capital’s West Rajabazar.
A case was filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station over the gory incident.
Police arrested slain couple’s family friend Tanvir, also deputy manager of Scholastic School, on October 1, 2012 and since then he has been in custody.
There is no new development in the investigation into the journo-couple murder case, according to police.
