HC acquits Maya from corruption charges

The High Court on Monday cancelled relief and disaster management minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya's conviction in a graft case.

Maya was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment by a lower court in the graft case.

An HC bench of Md NazrulIsalm Talukder and justice KM Hafizul Alam delivered the judgment.

Maya's lawyer Syed Ahmed Raja said that the HC relieved Maya from the jail sentence accepting an appeal filed by him.

The HC on Sunday fixed today (Monday) to deliver its verdict after re-hearing on the appeal filed by Maya against the lower court's conviction.

Earlier on 14 August the HC set 7 October for delivering its verdict in the case.

On 13 June, 2007, assistant director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Nurul Alam filed the case with Sutrapur police station for amassing wealth worth Tk 2.9 million illegally.

A Special Judges Court on 14 February, 2008, sentenced Maya to 13 years jail and also fined him Tk 5 crore over the wealth accumulation.

Maya filed an appeal on 25 May, 2009, with High Court and the HC cancelled the sentence of the Awami League leader on 27 October, 2010.

Later, on 14 June, 2015, a three-member bench of Appellate Division led by former chief justice SK Sinha cancelled the HC order acquitting the ruling party leader from the graft charges and ordered to re-hear his appeal.
