The inspector general of police, AKM Shahidul Haque, on Sunday justified the killing in crossfire or in gunfight with the law enforcers, saying that the police have the right to protect themselves.“The police (personnel) open fire in self-defense when they come under attack,” said the police chief while talking to newsmen after a programme in the capital Dhaka. The IGP inaugurated a two-week-long training programme for the members of the police and forest department officials of nine countries where there are tigers.Shahidul Haque claimed that the law and order situation is in a good state in the country. He, however, said the government was exerting all of its efforts to contain those who are trying to cause deterioration in law and order. When his attention was drawn to the killing of the activists of ruling Awami League’s (AL) student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in “gunfight” with law enforcers, he claimed that the terrorists have no identity.
“They take shelters under different political parties from time to time to pursue their personal gains, so actions are being taken against them by considering them terrorists,” he added.
Asked why the perpetrators of bloggers’ killing are not being detained, Shahidul Haque said, “The police have already arrested several perpetrators and are working to find out them. The police will for sure detain them one day.”
Members of police of detective branches and top forest department officials of Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Cambodia, Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia and Vietnam are taking part in the training programme.
