Journalist Mahbubul Alam passes away

Veteran journalist Mahbubul Alam, former editor of English national daily The Independent, died at the age of 78 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka on Friday. [Innalillahi...Rajiun]

Sources at the Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation for Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders (BIRDEM) Hospital said that Mahbubul died at about 9:00am on Friday.

He was suffering from physical complications for several days. 

Mahbubul's nephew Syed Mehedi Momin, assistant editor of The Independent, said the body was taken at the residence of Mahbub's younger brother in Gulshan-2 from the BIRDEM hospital.

His first namaj-e-janaza would take place at Gulshan Azad Mosque after Asar prayer.

Second namaj-e-janaza for Mahbub will be held at National Press Club after the zohar prayer at about 2:00pm on Saturday.

Mahbub's wife and three daughters are now in the United States. The decision on Mahbub's funeral will be taken after their arrival in Dhaka.

Born in Mymensingh on February 5, 1936, Mahbubul worked as the editor of The Independent newspaper for a long time.

He was the information adviser to caretaker government in 2006, ambassador to Bhutan and president of Newspaper Owners' Association of Bangladesh (NOAB).
