Long tailback on highways ahead of Eid

Vehicles were seen moving slowly on Dhaka-Mymensingh and Dhaka-Tangail highways on Friday following rush of home-bound people ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, creating suffering to people, reports UNB.

Highway police said that the number of passenger vehicles and good-laden started to increase from early morning which created the traffic jam.

A 15-km tailback was created in Tongi, Cherag Ali, College Gate, Gazipura, Borobari, Board bazar and adjoining areas on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.

Overtaking tendency of the drivers is a reason behind the traffic gridlock, said highway police.

Additional traffic police have been deployed at different points.

Besides, a 10-km traffic tailback has been created from Kharajora to Chandra and adjoining areas on Dhaka-Tangail highway as the number of cattle-laden vehicles has increased on the highway.

Meanwhile, People were stuck in a 22-kilometre tailback stretching from Sonargaon intersection to Daudkandi’s Hasanpur on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway on Friday.
Witnesses said the traffic congestion was created as an iron rod-laden truck turned turtle in Gajaria area on the highway early Friday.

Daudknadi highway police officer-in-charge Abul Kalam Azad said they were trying to ease the congestion.

A passenger named Tania Ferdaus said it had taken nearly four hours to cross 20 kilometres from Narayanganj to Daudkandi’s Meghna-Gumti bridge.

Another passenger Monir Hossain said he started his journey at 5:30am in the morning. He has travelled one-hour distance in 5 hours.

In a visit, the reporter found tailbacks on both sides of the highway.
