A Mercedes Benz was left abandoned in front of the Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation (DCII) office at Kakrail in Dhaka early Wednesday.

DCII director general Mainul Khan said a letter was found inside the car that claimed the vehicle was surrendered to the authorities out of respect to the law.

No name or address was, however, mentioned in the letter, Mainul said. The letter praised the authorities’ drive to seize tax-evading luxury cars.

“I wanted to set an example by depositing the car, so that others also surrender their illegal vehicles,” said the writer.

The car, worth about Tk 30 million, is an SLK 230 model two-door red Mercedes Benz of 2300 cc manufactured in 2002.

Customs intelligence has so far seized 32 luxury cars. These will be eventually auctioned.
