Senior Awami League leader Faruk Ahmed was killed on 18 January, 2013. His wife Nahar Ahmed filed a case after the murder without naming anyone. Orders to identify and arrest the murderers were given from the top level of the government. Prime minister Sheikh Hasina also consoled the family members of Faruk after calling them to Ganabhaban. She also assured them of justice.

Among the 15 accused in the primary investigation, only three were arrested. The four brothers remain fugitives.
