The members of parliament (MPs) have expressed their willingness to get back the authority to lead the governing body or managing committee of the non-government schools and colleges, official records show.

And accordingly, the education ministry is going to take legal steps to give back the MPs the authority to lead the managing committees of the educational institutions.

The ministry on Wednesday informed a meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on education ministry held at Sangsad Bhaban, about its steps.

The ministry is taking preparations to file an appeal against the High Court verdict that has barred the MPs from heading the school and college governing bodies, according to the minutes of the meeting.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on 12 June upheld the High Court order that termed inclusion of MPs as heads in the managing committees or governing bodies of the private schools and colleges illegal.

Earlier on 1 June, the HC declared two sections of the Governing Body and Managing Committee Regulations, 2009 as illegal which allow MPs to lead the managing committees or governing bodies of non-government schools and colleges.

As per the HC order, no member of parliament (MPs) will be allowed to hold the post of chairman of the managing committee or the governing body of any private school and college.

In the parliamentary panel meeting, its members wanted to know what measures the ministry was taking so that they could get back the authority to lead the committees, said MPs who were present in the meeting.

In response, the education ministry's secretary Sohrab Hossain said the full text of the HC verdict has been available by this time and the ministry was taking necessary steps.

The standing committee chairman, Afsarul Amin, told the meeting that there is no scope to do anything going beyond the HC orders regarding the managing committees as the education ministry has already initiated the process for filing an appeal against the HC verdict.

When contacted, standing committee member Hasan Mahmud told the Prothom Alo that all the MPs want back the authority to lead the managing committees of schools and colleges and accordingly the committee had requested the ministry to take necessary legal steps.

He said the ministry, too, is taking measures.
