In a demi-official letter, civil aviation and tourism minister Rashed Khan Menon has requested prime minister Sheikh Hasina to include him, his wife and 150 others of Narsingdi's Shibpur in the list of freedom fighters.

The minister in the letter addressed to the prime minister said that names of many people including him, his wife Lutfunnesa Khan, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) presidium member Haider Akbar Khan Rono and his brother Haidar Anwar Juno were not inducted into the list of freedom fighters after the liberation war in 1971.

Also the president of Workers Party of Bangladesh, Menon mentioned that a new list of freedom fighters is now being prepared.

“Unless our names are included in the list this time, we’ll be deprived of the honour [of being freedom fighter],” he said in the letter written on his ministry’s letterhead.

The letter also claimed that Menon took part in the liberation war as an organiser by forming a committee along with some left-leaning parties in Shibpur.

The minister said their freedom fighters kept Shibpur free during the nine months of the liberation war.
