National Professor Salahuddin Ahmed dies
National Professor Salahuddin Ahmed has died of old-age complications at his Banani residence at about 6:30am on Sunday. He was 90.
Sammilita Sangskritik Jote (SSJ) general secretary Hassan Arif said that Salahuddin Ahmed will be taken at Central Shahid Minar and will be kept there from 3:00pm to 4:00pm where people from all walks of life can pay their last respects to him.
Born in 1924 at Faridpur, Salahuddin Ahmed received his M.A degree on History from Kolkata University.
He also studied in Pennsylvania University of USA. He achieved his PhD degree from London University.
Salahuddin Ahmed joined socialist movement in his student life. He started his teaching career in 1948 as a lecturer at Jagannath College. Later he was also the professor of Rajshahi, Jahangirnagar and Dhaka Universities.
He retired from Dhaka University in 1984 and was recruited as supernumerary professor.
Salahuddin Ahmed was appointed as "National Professor" by the government in 2011.
He bagged Ekushey Padak and Independence Day Award.
Some of the publications of Salahuddin Ahmed are Social ideas and social change in Bengal 1818-1835, Bangladesh Tradition and Transformation, Bengali Nationalism and the Emergence of Bangladesh, Itihash O Oitijhya, and Bangalir Sadhana O Bangalir Muktijuddha.
