Nazrul's widow wins NCC ward-2 by-polls

Selina Islam Beauty, widow  of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) panel mayor and councillor Nazrul Islam, won the by-election to ward-2 of the city corporation on Saturday.

Contesting the poll with the lion symbol, Selina Islam got 5,266 votes while her nearest contender secured 1,958 votes, according to the official result declared at about 5:00pm on Saturday.

In total, 7,775 votes out of 16,729 eligible votes were cast in the poll, which began at 8:00am and will continued till 4:00pm without any break.

In her instant reaction after the result was declared, Selina Islam told reporters that she wants to take up the unfinished works of her husband.

The councillor post of the NCC ward-2 fell vacant with the death of councillor Nazrul Islam, who was abducted along with six other people on April 27 and subsequently murdered. 

On April 27, panel mayor Nazrul Islam and his three associates and driver were abducted from Fatullah in Narayanganj city.

Senior lawyer of the Narayanganj District Judge’s Court Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were also abducted on their way to capital Dhaka.

Their bodies were recovered from the River Shitalakhya on April 30 and May 1.
