One killed as police clash with demonstrators in Mymensingh

A man was killed in a clash between the police and the demonstrators who demanded nationalisation of a college in Phulbaria of Mymensigh on Sunday.

According to the protesters, the person named Safar Ali, 60, an inhabitant of nearby Kushmail village, died when the police chased them.

The police, however, claimed that the person died of different reason as the spot of death was 300 yards from that of the demonstration.

Local people said teachers, students and others have been demonstrating for nationalisation of Phulbaria College for one and a half months.

They were aggrieved by the government decision of nationalising another college instead.

The police stopped them when they tried to bring out a procession at around 2pm on Sunday. They clashed and the police opened fire.

Safar Ali died in the middle of the clash, the demonstrators said.

"Safar Ali was found dead 300 yards from the spot of demonstration, so the reason of his death would be something different," said Rifat Khan Razib, officer in charge of Phulbari police station.
