Owner of FR Tower’s illegal portion detained

Detectives detained the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tasveer Ul Islam, owner of the illegally constructed portion of FR (Faruk Rupayan) Tower, from his Baridhara residence on Saturday night, reports UNB.

Members of Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Tasveer around 10:45pm, said Shahjahan Saju, additional deputy commissioner of DB (North).

The detained claimed that he is the owner of the top three floors (20th, 21st and 22nd) of the building, the police official said.

Tasveer, a BNP central committee member, is also the president of Kurigarm district BNP and the managing director of Quasem Drycells Ltd.

According to reports, Tasveer illegally built three storeys on top of the 18-storey FR Tower during the tenure of BNP-Jamaat alliance government between 2001-2006.

Earlier at noon, Banani police station sub-inspector Milton Dutta filed a case accusing land owner SMHI Faruk, 65, Rupayan Group chairman Liaquat Ali Khan Mukul, 57, Quasem Drycells Ltd managing director Tasveer Ul Islam, 62, FR Tower management committee members and several others, over Thursday's fire incident, said additional deputy commissioner (media) Obaidur.

Meanwhile, a number of probe bodies have been formed to investigate the devastating fire incident that left 26 people dead and many more injured.
